A POPBRUSH Tribute

Remembering Tim Curry

Celebrating the life, career, and unforgettable legacy of the man who brought Frank-N-Furter to life.

Some actors play a character. Tim Curry became part of the character's mythology.

For generations of fans, his name will forever be connected to Dr. Frank-N-Furter — the unforgettable scientist, performer, and larger-than-life personality at the center of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

But Curry's career was so much bigger than one role. Across stage, film, television, and voice acting, he built a career defined by risk-taking, incredible range, theatrical energy, and a willingness to play characters that most actors would never touch.

Following his passing in August 2026 at the age of 80, fans around the world have been looking back at the performances that made Tim Curry impossible to forget.

He never played it safe.

From Broadway to cult cinema, Tim Curry built a career around characters with personality, unpredictability, and an unmistakable presence.

The Beginning

Before Frank-N-Furter

Tim Curry was born in England in 1946 and studied English and drama at the University of Birmingham. His professional career began on the London stage, including the original London production of Hair in 1968.

It was through the theater world that Curry crossed paths with Richard O'Brien, who would go on to create The Rocky Horror Show.

That connection would eventually lead to one of the most recognizable characters in musical theater and film history.

The Icon

Becoming Frank-N-Furter

In 1973, Curry stepped into the role of Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the original London production of The Rocky Horror Show.

The character was unlike anything audiences had seen before. Frank-N-Furter was theatrical, provocative, funny, confident, strange, and completely unapologetic.

Curry's performance became the heart of the production. When The Rocky Horror Show was adapted into The Rocky Horror Picture Show in 1975, Curry reprised the role and transformed Frank-N-Furter into a permanent piece of pop-culture history.

🎭

The Performer

Curry brought a stage presence to every role he played, whether he was performing in a musical, drama, comedy, or cult classic.

🎬

The Character Actor

From Pennywise in It to roles in Clue, Annie, and Home Alone 2, Curry could make even the strangest characters completely unforgettable.

🖤

The Original

Curry never seemed interested in fitting neatly into one category. His career was built around curiosity, risk, and characters that pushed boundaries.

A Cultural Phenomenon

Frank-N-Furter Became Bigger Than the Movie

The Rocky Horror Picture Show didn't simply become a successful movie. It became an experience.

Midnight screenings turned into events where audiences dressed as their favorite characters, shouted back at the screen, brought props, danced along to The Time Warp, and celebrated the film together.

At the center of that experience was Frank-N-Furter. Curry's performance gave audiences a character who was impossible to ignore — and for many fans, impossible not to love.

More than 50 years later, the character continues to inspire costumes, performances, artwork, and fans discovering the film for the first time.

Beyond Rocky Horror

A Career Full of Unforgettable Characters

It would be easy to define Tim Curry entirely by Frank-N-Furter. But doing so would leave out an incredible body of work.

Curry appeared in films including Clue, Annie, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, The Three Musketeers, and Muppet Treasure Island.

He also terrified an entirely different generation as Pennywise in the 1990 television adaptation of Stephen King's It.

On Broadway, Curry earned three Tony Award nominations for his performances in Amadeus, My Favorite Year, and Spamalot.

His Legacy

He Gave People Permission to Be Different

Perhaps the most lasting part of Curry's legacy is not a single award or performance. It's the feeling his work created.

Frank-N-Furter, in particular, became a character that celebrated individuality and challenged audiences to embrace something outside the ordinary.

For countless fans, The Rocky Horror Picture Show became a place where being different wasn't something to hide. It was something to celebrate. Tim Curry was at the center of that experience.
